Project Summary:
The MISH study explores how co-infection with malaria parasites and Schistosoma species impacts intestinal integrity, inflammation, and systemic immune responses. In many endemic regions, these infections overlap, yet the consequences of their interaction for intestinal health remain poorly understood.
By combining clinical cohort studies in Uganda with laboratory analyses of blood and urine, we aim to uncover how parasitic co-infection influences barrier function, immune activation, and anaemia. Through this work, we hope to better understand how chronic and repeated infections shape the balance between host protection and pathology in those living in endemic areas.
