Charlotte Willoughby

Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health

Charlotte Willoughby is a Wellcome Trust PhD candidate investigating how co-infection with malaria and schistosomiasis affects intestinal health. Although both parasites are highly prevalent in many regions, little is known about how a coinfection interacts within the gut — particularly concerning diarrhoea, enteropathy, parasite burden, transmission, and the host’s ability to mount an effective intestinal and immunological response. Charlotte’s project combines field studies in Uganda with murine models to address this knowledge gap, aiming to uncover the cellular and immunological mechanisms that drive intestinal pathology during single and co-infections.
